We examine whether persistent poverty-related deficits are a contributing factor to the widely recognized correlation between childhood disadvantage and mental health. Growth curve modeling was applied to assess the developmental patterns of persistence on challenging tasks and mental health across three age groups (9, 13, and 17). The experience of poverty from birth to age nine, defined as childhood poverty, corresponds to lower levels of persistence and a decline in mental health for individuals aged nine to seventeen. Our study establishes a connection between childhood poverty and diminished well-being during adolescence.
